The shear strip is the first strip to be installed. It is located on the hull side of the shear line (the line that separates the hull from the deck, also the widest part of kayak.) It is hot glued to the stations and glued to the internal stem pieces front and rear. It’s important to get this strip smoothly in place since it will affect the shape of the next strip which is glued to it and so on.
Once the hull is done, the kayak will be flipped over in order to strip the deck. The first strip of the deck will rest against the shear strip, but not be glued to it. This will allow the deck to be separated from the hull and the skeleton to be removed. The deck and hull will be connected during the fiber-glassing stage.
